Overall Use

TOC

California Propostion 84 funds State Park projects all over the State of California to improve such things as water quality, flood control and clean air. ST8Parks Mobile will show you where these projects are on the Project Map within theGray Circle. It will also allow you to filter and sort these projects in the Project List menu item. Specifically, this app concentrates on showing projects that are State Parks centric, i.e. what projects have been done in or around California State Parks. Note though that this could be expanded to show other Proposition 84 projects that are specific to CA Parks department but not necessarily specific to the State Parks themselves. The app has a timeout feature that will time the app out after 15 minutes of not being used. Also, upon entry into the app it will check to see if you have location capabilities turned on if so it will use your location as the map center. If not, it will put the map center in downtown Sacramento area, which will show some State Parks and projects within 1.5 miles of the center of the map. Go to the About menu item to see specifically what Proposition 84 is for. Further, the application will allow finding projects via a State Park, County, Assembly District or Senate District map. The County map is the default map seen upon entry into the application. The app also keeps track of certain that are Trending. These include number of people using the app within a time period and "visits" to State Parks or projects also within a specified time period.

Google Maps Operation

TOC

This application is written using Google Maps. All the functionality of a Google Map is provided with the ST8Parks Mobile application. The maps can be moved left, right and top and/or bottom either by using a mouse (click) or a finger (tap). They can also be zoomed in and out of via the pinch in and out with fingers or using the zoom +/- provided on the map with a finger or a mouse. The map also provides Map and Satellite view (see Map | Satellite boxes on the maps). If Map view is chosen tap or click will show/not show the Terrain by checking/unchecking that box. If Satellite view is chosen tap or click on the Labels checkbox to check/uncheck to show/not show map Labels. If the map is zoomed in enough in Satellite view the 45 degree checkbox will appear. If checked it will show the ground at a 45 degree angle if unchecked it will show the ground as if looking straight down at the ground. If tapping or clicking on the little orange person icon the map goes into street level view. Press the return button to get back to the map. NOTE: If on a smartphone you can "cruise" down the road using the arrow keys. On a larger screened device you will be able to put the circle down the road and have the map move to that location. If the County or Assembly or Senate layers (see ST8Park(/County, Assembly, Senate) Picker for more detailed informatopm on this) are not showing on the map (in the main map only denoted by having the Gray Circle (Project Map) with the Yellow Pushpin and Red Pushpin) than you can get at and click on the the text that is hyperlinked on the map and have it launch successfully. If any of these layers are showing on the map you cannot click on these hyperlinks and successfully launch them.

Project Map

TOC

This map is the map observed when this application first comes up. It is also the map arrived at after picking a point (by double click/tap on the map) from the Find by State Park, Find by County, Find by Assembly District, Find by Senate District, Trending User and Trending Park/Project (these latter 2 you double click/tap on the park/project icons on the map) menu items. It is the map that will show the projects (shown as Green Project Markers for example) within the Gray Circle along with the Yellow Pushpin and Red Pushpin. Depending on what map layer which overlays the map and represent boundries for State Counties, State Assembly Districts and State Senate Districts is being worked in clicking/tapping on the layer will bring up a box telling you what boundry of the the layer it is. For example clicking/tapping on the boundry of Sacramento County will bring up a box contianing text saying Sacramento County. If you click inside the Gray Circle it will show you what the boundry is regardless if the layer is showing or not. See ST8Park(/County, Assembly, Senate) Picker for more information on layers and project markers. Click/Tap the 'X' on the right of the box to make it disappear. The boundries of the layer for a map are drawn in black and are easily observed. Clicking/Tapping anywhere on the map will bring this box up and if another is on the page, that one will disappear. At present, this is the only way to know what the boundry is within the outline. One last feature that this map has is allowing to "Find" a location. By typing a city, address, zip code, park name (50 characters maximum) in the text box (background placeholder text in gray is "addr, city, zip, park (50 chrs max)")) next to the F! button (Find button) at the top of the map and then clicking on that button, the map will relocate to that location and show the pushpins, circle and any project project markers (if they are turned on, checked in the ST8Park(/County, Assembly, Senate) Picker) that exist within that circle. Clicking on the C! button (Clear button) next to the F! button will empty the textbox.

Proposition Project Markers (Project Map)

TOC

If a project's latitude and longitude falls within the Gray Circle the project will show up as a project marker in the Gray Circle. These markers can be of different types and color and will represent different Propositions a project is funded by along with possible a subcategory. Examples being the box shaped Green Project Marker with a white star in the middle represents Proposition 84 State Park project, i.e. a project done on a State Park and the tree shaped Green Project Marker represents Proposition 84 non-State Park project, i.e. a project not done on a State Park. These Proposition project markers can be added to (or taken away for that matter) with new icons as new ones are added to the ST8Parks Mobile app. Every map in this application will contain these Proposition Project Markers. Clicking or tapping on the project marker will bring up an information window for the project containing the Proposition the project is funded by, the project number (which is also a link), the title of the project and the distance from the circle. Clicking or tapping the link will put the user on the the detail page for the project. This will provide more information on the project including a description, completion date and funding of the project. To get back to the map click or tap the Back to Project List and then when in Project List click or tap Back to Map.

Yellow Pushpin (Project Map)

TOC

This can represent the approximate location you are located at (if Location is turned on, on your phone) when the Project Map first comes up. Otherwise it is where you have chosen it to be by other means, e.g. moving it with your mouse/finger to a different location. Place a finger or mouse (hold down the left mouse button too if using a mouse) on the Yellow Pushpin. Slowly move it on the map, the dashboard will update accordingly. Once you "drop" the Yellow Pushpin in place by picking up a finger or letting up on the left mouse button the Gray Circle will repopulate with any projects (if they are turned on, checked in the ST8Park(/County, Assembly, Senate) Picker) by placing project markers within the circle. See ST8Park(/County, Assembly, Senate) Picker for more information on the Yellow Pushpin, layers and Proposition Project Markers.

Red Pushpin (Project Map)

TOC

This represents the distance from the Yellow Pushpin location in miles and determines the circle drawn on the map. Place a finger or mouse (hold down the left mouse button too if using a mouse) and hold it on the Red Pushpin and slowly move it on the map, the dashboard will update accordingly. Depending on how the Red Pushpin is moved, the Gray Circle opens up or closes. Once you "drop" the Red Pushpin in place by picking up a finger or letting up on the left mouse button the Gray Circle will repopulate with any projects (if they are turned on, checked in the ST8Park(/County, Assembly, Senate) Picker) by placing Proposition Project Markers within the circle. See ST8Park(/County, Assembly, Senate) Picker for more information on the Red Pushpin, layers and Proposition Project Markers.

Black State Park Markers (Project Map)

TOC

Every map in this application will contain Black State Park Markers representing all categories of California State Parks. They can all be shown on the map or all not shown on the map or any incarnation thereof. See ST8Park(/County, Assembly, Senate) Picker for more detail. In the Project Map clicking or tapping on the marker will bring up the information window for that State Park and it will contain a link to the State Park, information on where the point is located, a link to get directions to the park and a link to the State Parks website.

ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker (Project Map)

TOC

This is the light gray retangular box located in the lower left hand corner of the Project Map with wording on it + ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker. By clicking or tapping on it, it will open up and present a checkbox list as such (the text in parenthesis is the full meaning and does not show up in the checkbox list): into several catagories and they are:

  • County or Senate or Assembly
  • Property (State Property)
  • Pt of Int (Point of Interest)
  • Beach (State Beach)
  • Hist Monument (State Historical Monument)
  • Hist Park (State Historic Park)
  • Marine Res (State Marine Reserve)
  • Natural Res (State Natural Reserve)
  • Park (State Park)
  • Rec Area (State Recreation Area)
  • Seashore (State Seashore)
  • Veh Rec Area (State Vehicular Recreation Area)
For the Project Map all State Parks appear on the map and all checkboxes are checked. At any time the check boxes can be checked or unchecked. If checked that will show the Black State Park Markers for that category of State Parks and if unchecked those category of Black State Park Markers will disappear from the map. This allows pinpointing of a State Park category if desired. Also, if the plus sign is next to the wording ST8Park Picker, Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker then clicking/tapping in that area will open the picker. Likewise, if there is a negative sign next to the wording then clicking/tapping in that area will close the picker. Last, the picker is somewhat see through allowing visual of the map underneath it.

Another thing to note about the picker when you are on the Project Map is towards the top of the picker when it is open you will see an extra checkbox that will say County or Assembly or Senate. These represent the layer showing boundries for State Counties, State Assembly Districts and State Senate Districts. The default is County when you first enter the application. If you do a Find by.. State Park or County it will be County. If you do a Find by... Assembly District it will say Assembly and if you do a Find by... Senate District it will be Senate. By unchecking or checking by clicking/tapping this checkbox you will see the boundries it pertains to (County, Assembly or Senate) either appear or disappear from the map. If it is not showing on the map than you can get at and click on the the text that is hyperlinked on the map and have it launch successfully. If it is showing on the map you cannot click on these hyperlinks and successfully launch them.

A further note about the picker when you are on the Project Map is that at the top of the picker when it is open you will see extra checkboxes that will be representing the Proposition Project Markers and will be labeled with the icon that they represent to the right of the text. These represent the layer showing the different types of Proposition Project Markers and if they have them, their subcategories. An example being, the Proposition 84 State Park project which are projects performed on specific State Parks (the subcategory being SP representing State Park) are labeled P84 SP Prj with a box shaped Green Project Marker with a white star in the middle next to it. Checking or unchecking the checkboxes will show or not show the corresponding Proposition Project Markers within the Gray Circle.

It should be noted that there is an interaction between what is checked and unchecked in the ST8Park/County...Picker and what is shown in the Gray Circle. As the Red Pushpin or the Yellow Pushpin are moved Proposition Project Markers will appear and or disappear from the inside of the Gray Circle, depending if their latitudes and longitudes fall with in the Gray Circle area. If the checkbox for a Proposition Project Marker is checked and its latitude and longitude fall within the Gray Circle then that marker will show in the Gray Circle but if the checkbox is unchecked and the Proposition Project Marker latitude and longitude falls within the Gray Circle then the marker will not show in the Gray Circle. In addition, as the Gray Circle is being sized via the Red Pushpin or moved via the Yellow Pushpin it can be observed in the ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker that the entry of the Proposition Project Marker represented by their checkboxes, label and icon will appear and disapper depending if they are within the Gray Circle. The state of the checkbox (checked or unchecked) is kept as the entry turns on an off. Therefore, be vigilant of this interaction. A couple of the advantages of turning these Proposition Project Markers on and off is to allow less markers in the Gray Circle as it can become cluttered with markers and also some of the markers overlay each other and the easiest way to get at a marker underneath another one is to uncheck that entry in the ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker thus making the overlaying marker disappear allowing access to the underlying marker.

Further, there is interaction between the Project List (for more detail go to How to Use...Project List) and what is observed within the Gray Circle and Proposition Project Markers checked or unchecked in the ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker. What is set in the Project List (Tool Box) in Search, Title by Alpha, Proposition and Topic will filter what projects are shown in the Gray Circle in the Project Map. Note on the Project List the County/Circle choice only affect the list on the Project List page not what is in the Gray Circle on the Project Map. As an example, if in the Project List Title by Alpha was set to "A" and there were projects that started with "A" in the title and all other filters we left as default you should expect to see all projects within the Gray Circle having a Title start with the letter "A". If some of the Proposition Project Markers were unchecked then their Titles beginning with "A" would not appear in the Gray Circle and you may be wondering where they are. That is when you have to check the ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker to see what Proposition Project Markers are checked or unchecked. If it is unchecked you won't see them, if it is checked you will. Another example is when you choose a specific Proposition in the Project List you will only see those projects belonging to that Proposition within the Gray Circle on the Project Map even if you had other Proposition Project Markers checked in the ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker prior to going into the Project List from the Project Map. In fact, only the Proposition picked in the Project List and it's associated entry in the ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker on the Project Map will show and be checked if there projects for that Proposition within the Gray Circle. If no projects exist within the Gray Circle then no entry for the Proposition Project Markers will be observed in the ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker, but the entry will remain checked or unchecked depending how it was last left. The only way to see other Proposition Project Markers or all the markers in the ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker is to go back into the Project List and change the Proposition entry in the Project List (Tool Box). Again, the Project List page will trump what is set for Propositin Project Markers in the ST8Park(/County or Assembly or Senate) Picker and thus what is showing in the Gray Circle on the Project Map.

Dash Board (Project Map)

TOC

The dashboard is in the format: Cnt: 38.581, -121.494 / 1.499 mi. frm Cnt. It will show in yellow "Cnt: 38.581, -121.494" to indicate that it is associated with the Yellow Pushpin and it will show in red "1.499 mi. frm Cnt." to indicate it is associated with the Red Pushpin. The dashboard is located at the top of the Project Map (the one with the Gray Circle in it). The 'Cnt:' is showing the present latitude and longitude the Yellow Pushpin is at and will change as the pushpin is moved with a finger or mouse. The next piece of information is the 'mi. frm Cnt', i.e. mile(s) from the center latitude/longitude point and will change as the pushpin is moved with a finger or mouse.
